What is a "ghost," and where does this name come from?
Sometimes we hear people call those who "know everything, know news about everyone, and even know everyone's private affairs" "ghosts." Why is that? Where does this name come from?
A ghost is a very powerful spirit, considered one of the strongest in Thai-Khmer sorcery. Contrary to folklore that ghosts are evil, the practice of using ghosts is passed down by Master AJ Aek, a successor of many high-ranking monks in the Chiang Mai region.
The ritual for creating a ghost begins with the master preparing an earthen pot and drawing incantations. The pot is then supported by a real human skull from a deserted cemetery or graveyard. Then the sorcerer will cook the bones, hair, fat, and skin of the deceased along with various herbs, coffin nails, and the corpse's cloth or clothing in a cauldron for 49 days, chanting incantations and meditating while cooking until everything solidifies into a black, crystallized mixture. The sorcerer will then wrap thread around bamboo to form a human effigy and dip it into the concoction. In addition, sacred Nam Man Prai oil, inscribed talismans, and a tainted string are added.
This powerful spirit fulfills the desires of its worshippers.
